I had the option to make either a dada-inspired collage based on a recent news story or a futuristic piece based on a lyric or poem of my choice. I decided to go with the futurism piece for this project. The song that I have chosen is Reflection from Disney's Mulan made in 1998. I find myself connecting with this song as I struggle with bicultural identity. The specific verse I chose represents the idea that I am divided by what people expect me to be and what I want to be. I want the viewer to get a feeling of uncertainty and feel divided between two sides, two distinct versions. On the left poses this idea of being unsure and wondering what it really means whereas the right side is clear and that is the true self. I use the words “AM I” on the left to raise the idea in question along with question marks and the words “I AM” with exclamation marks to justify the idea of certainty.
